The Toy Train Ride to Matheran

Amidst green natural surroundings and a peaceful environment of Matheran, any weary traveller would feel relaxed and extremely rejuvenated. This beautiful hill-station was discovered in mid-nineteenth century by a British Officer called Hugh Mallet. It gets plenty of visitors every year who leave behind their stressful routines and have a great time in its picturesque locations. A Tribute to Yash Chopra

Old memories got stirred up with the sad demise of a legendary phenomenon called Yash Chopra. Missing a great stalwart like Yashji is a huge loss to the film Industry. Film industry is a glittering world full of talents, but a few dignitaries like him keep an everlasting impression of their own on it. The veteran filmmaker and “King of romance” passed away in Mumbai on 21 October 2012.

This journey called Yash Raj Chopra started in September 27, 1932 when youngest of eight children Yash was born at Lahore. Initially being a film journalist he tried to make a career in engineering, but his passion for filmmaking attracted him towards the glamorous world of cinema. Instead of going to London for further studies in engineering he tried joining his brother filmmaker B R Chopra as an assistant. He was keeping an ambition of becoming a film director. His brother diverted him to I S Johar for getting the initial lessons of film making. After taking a few lessons from Johar he joined his brother B R Chopra. There he worked for two years as an apprentice. He was offered first opportunity to direct a film called Dhool Ka Phool in 1959 which he fulfilled successfully. Encouraged by the success, Chopra brothers together made many movies like Waqt and Ittefaq. Yash Chopra received his first ‘Film fare award’ for directing the film ‘Waqt’ in 1965.

Another milestone for him was making of film ‘Ittefaq’ which was a low budget film made in just a months period. It was recorded as Bellwood’s first movie without an interval and song. This film rewarded Yash with “Best director film fare award”.

After this initial success shared with his brothers he worked alone and made landmarks by giving films like Deewar, Trishul, Silsila and Chandani. Then getting separated from his brother B R Chopra, Yash established a production house in 1971 called ‘Yash Raj Films’. Year 1973 was a year of great achievement for him when he made Yash Raj Film Studio in Mumbai. Super hit film ‘Daag’ opened the account of many block busters which YRF gave to the film industry. Somewhere in this period Yashji introduced ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ as the angry young man in “Deewar” and then a non stop era of giving super hit films one after the other continued. During the period when film industry was revolving mainly around topics of social problems and love stories, it was this great film maker who gave a new direction. This proved to be a revolution in Hindi cinema which made Amitabh a superstar, with a solid image of angry young man in the movies hitting box office one after the other. 

A few years in the eighties was a setback for YR films but again he came on the success track, this time making a little change in his topics. His film Chandani received National Film Fare award in 1989 which was a great come back for the veteran film maker. In 1991 ‘Lamhe’ was credited the biggest Bollywood hit in overseas market. His recent films reflected his love for Switzerland where he made many of his modern era films. Bagging reputed film awards was an easy task for him. He won eleven Film fare awards for his outstanding films and the topmost reward Padma Bhushan in 2005. Through out his life till his demise he lived a life of a dedicated gentleman in the film industry. Ganesh Utsav 2012 Decoration Competition Conducted by Magic Holidays

Why we celebrate Dasara - Vijaya Dashami?

The grand festival of Hindus, Dasara - Vijaya Dashami is a Hindu festival that symbolically celebrates the triumph of good over evil. As per Ramayana the festival basically celebrates the victory of Hindu deity Rama over demon King Ravana who is portrayed as having ten heads. The main reason of the war between Lord Rama and Demon king Ravana was the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana and keeping her in an isolated place.

Ravana turned down every request by Rama to return back Sita unconditionally. The only alternative remained with Lord Rama was to win back Sita by defeating Ravana in a face to face war. Ravana was finally defeated after a fierce war which lasted for several days. The festival of Dasara was initially called Dash Hara meaning loosing ten heads by Ravana, which later became popular as Dasara. Rama defeated and killed Ravana in his own kingdom of Lanka. Rama returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya on Ashwin Shukla Dashmi and hence it is celebrated as the day of victory or Vijaya Dashmi meaning victorious tenth day of Ashwin.

Presently it is a gazetted holiday in India, which is marked on the 10th day of the bright half called Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashvin, according to the Hindu calendar. Hindu people observe this important festival through special prayers and offerings in the form of food to the gods at their residence or in the temples. This festival is celebrated throughout the country with great enthusiasm. Houses are nicely cleaned and decorated. Special vegetarian festival food is prepared and there is a festive atmosphere every where. In Maharashtra dasara processions are taken at Mumbai, Thane and many other places. The participants wear traditional costumes and chant the prayers of Shri Ram. People celebrate it as the special day offering prayers at home and in the temples. In major Indian cities like Mysore and Shirdi it is celebrated with lots of pomp and fervor. Mysore actually gets dipped for ten days in the Dasara celebrations.

Outdoor fairs called melas are held at many places. The effigy of Ravana with ten heads is burnt in the evening of Dasara. A performance called Ramlila which is the short version of epic Ramayana is played during this period in most parts of Northern India. It describes the best qualities of Rama and throws light on the life of this great hero who is supposed to be the ideal personality. Ramlila providing knowledge and entertainment to the public continues for ten days. On the tenth day a big effigy of Ravana bearing ten heads is erected near the venue of Ramlila performance. The performance is concluded when the character of Rama shots an arrow on the effigy of Ravana and it is burnt by the crackers placed inside.

This festival always reminds us of one fact that evil in this world is temporary and it is always destroyed when the proportion of evil exceeds certain limit. So every one of us should stay on the good path of life and never do injustice to anyone around us. One day or the other the evil powers in the world, whatever strong they might be are overpowered by the good. World Tourism day is celebrated every year on 27 September. Its sole purpose is to spread awareness of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value in the minds of international community. This great event tries to bring forward global challenges mentioned in the UN Millennium Development Goals as well as highlight how much contribution tourism sector can make towards achieving this goal. This year it will be celebrated on 27th September under the theme Tourism & Sustainable Energy, powering sustainable development. 

World tourism day 2012 will be highlighting the need of bringing tourism sector and energy barons together to discuss the need of tourism sector in contributing towards sustainability. Huge investments are poured into renewable energy sources for aviation, meaning sustainable energy is a priority of the tourism sector. The initiatives and commitments on this day will be helping to protect the environment and also they will be creating employment for millions in tourism as well as energy sectors. Millions of people around the world depend for income on the energy-intensive tourism sector. Sustainable energy will allow tourism to expand while lessening its impact on the environment. 

WTD will be officially celebrated in the town of Maspalomas in the Canary Islands, Spain in presence of the Spanish Secretary of State for tourism Isabel Borrego. Other participants at the meet will be Spanish Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, and President of Acciona Energy, Carmen Becerril, representing Spanish multinational Acciona. These official celebrations will include a high level think platform on the 2012 theme, trying to stress the need of the two sectors to work together. Spain stands among the top five countries investing in renewable energies and 20% of its energy consumed comes from renewable energy sources. Spain deserves this leadership as it has already proved its awareness towards the subject by becoming world leader in using renewable energies. At the same time it is one of the global top tourism destinations. This year’s theme will also try to highlight role of tourism in a brighter energy future in which entire world’s population will have access to modern, efficient and affordable energy services.

India’s best performance at Olympics 2012

After a long wait of 2012 Summer Olympics by the sports enthusiasts around the world, the games were inaugurated with a great applause and a grand opening ceremony at 9 pm on 27th July 2012. The ceremony truly titled “Isles of Wonder” opened doors for many happenings enclosed in the exciting battle for medals. Olympic Park in east England, the venue for the games hosted range of exciting events and attractions during the games. Some of the best athletes from around two hundred four nations were welcomed at Olympics 2012.

The beautiful mascots for these games the one-eyed characters 'Wenlock' and 'Mandeville' were created from the last two drops of steel used for the London Olympics 2012. The big list of sports included twenty six different types of sports. This was the third time London was hosting the Olympic Games. Fifty three African, forty four Asian, forty nine European, seventeen Oceania and forty one American countries participated in the games. The parade of nations at the opening ceremony was accompanied by athletes and officials of 204 nations, led by Greece team. It was followed by other countries and finally the hosts Great Briton. The Olympic flag was carried by eight people chosen as symbols of the Olympic values.

This time Indian Olympic Association had sent total eighty three athletes for competing in thirteen different sports. This was the largest team India had ever sent to the Olympic Games. Sushil kumar was holding the Indian flag during opening ceremony. After the glorious opening ceremony, every day increased the curiosity of the spectators. China started with a brilliant start bagging maximum medals in the initial stage. India stood with the best ever performance regarding number of medals won at Olympic Games and finished with total six medals two silver and four bronze.

The success story of Indian medals started with the first bronze medal won by ace Indian shooter Gagan Narang in the ten meter air rifle event. Vijay kumar brought the second medal which was the first silver medal for the country in men’s 25 m rapid fire pistol event. Indians throughout the world rejoiced with joy and cheers for this first silver medal received at London.  Keeping the score board of medals moving, Saina Nehwal won a bronze medal in women’s singles for Badminton. The fourth medal was brought by Mary Kom by winning a Bronze in the women’s flyweight boxing event. She is the first Indian women to win a medal in boxing at the Olympics. Yogeshwar Dutt won a bronze in the 60 kg freestyle wrestling event. The second silver medal was snatched by Sushil Kumar in 66 kg freestyle wrestling. He became the first Indian to win an individual medal in consecutive Olympics. This comparatively good performance of the athletes has raised India’s hopes and they are expecting still more number of medals at the next Brazil Olympics in 2016. 

The games were concluded with United States achieving total 104 medals and standing on the top of the medal list. Like the opening ceremony the closing ceremony of the Olympics 2012 on 12th August 2012 was also amazing. Mary Kom was the Indian flag bearer at the closing ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, the Olympic Games were handed over to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics. Celebrate Indian Independence Day 2012

India became an independent nation on 15 August 1947. Every year it celebrates its Independence Day on August 15. This year’s Independence Day is at the doorsteps, so let us visualize this region before independence and how this year Independence Day will be celebrated on 15th August 2012.

Before independence this region was divided into many small kingdoms. Since there was no central power to rule this vast region, many foreign powers attacked the small kingdoms and tried to rule this region. They formed a company called East India Company and slowly started gaining power by defeating the local rulers. At one point they captured this vast region and brought it under their control popularly called British Raj or British Empire. The establishment of the British rule was a nightmare. The movement for independence gathered roots throughout the country and grew into a nation wide movement for freedom. Finally the British rule was unable to crush this movement for independence and the nation was declared as independent.

Independence Day 2012, will mark sixty five years of Indian independence. On this day our prime responsibility is to pay homage to the freedom fighters and great Martyrs. We achieved our independence and are enjoying a respected life as citizen of a great nation because of them. On this occasion Government buildings as well as public places are decorated with beautiful lighting. The occasion is celebrated with great devotion throughout the country. In a special ceremony at red fort the president of India addresses the nation on the eve of independence. Next day the prime minister of India hoists national tricolor flag along with a speech dedicated to the nation. In this speech the prime minister presents our national achievements at the same time alerts us about the threats standing ahead. While hoisting the flag a 21 gun salute is offered to the prime minister. The naval band plays the national anthem. The happenings on this day at red fort in Delhi are broadcasted on national television so that the citizens are able to watch them. India Gate in Delhi is beautifully decorated on this day. A national holiday is observed throughout the nation for celebrating this day. Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs are held in capital Delhi and state capitals. This involves celebrations at schools by unfurling the national flag and the students presenting patriotic songs.

As this day is marked as holiday many people spend the day with family or friends. Some of them go for an outing and picnics. We must feel proud to be the citizens of this great nation and must pledge on this day that we will devote our soul for the well being of our country. Raksha Bandhan 2012 is on the Doorsteps

India is said to be a land of wonders, miracles, many religions, cultures and variety of landscapes but one thing in common is we are proud of being an Indian. Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Purnima is the Hindu festival celebrated on the full moon day of Shravana. It is known by the name of Kajari Purnima in North India.  Rakhi is a sacred thread tied by a sister on the wrist of her brother, requesting to protect her during difficult situations. This fastening of Rakhi on the brother’s wrist symbolizing request to protect his sister is known as Raksha Bandhan. Sisters perform 'aarti' and apply tilak on the forehead of her brother. In return brother gives her a gift and an assurance to protect her. The thread of Rakhi which binds the love and affection of a sister is supposed to have more power and strength. It signifies the beautiful brother-sister relation with an unbreakable bond of trust and love. This festival also signifies that we should try to coexist in a harmonious way forgetting our differences, religions and castes. We must give importance to the only religion called humanity. This festival celebrated throughout the country differs a bit from place to place but the basic thought behind it is the same. There are many legends related to Raksha Bandhan. One of the most popular stories is that of Rani Karnawati and emperor Humayun. When Rani Karnawati, the widowed Rajput queen of the king of Chittor, realized that she could not withstand the invasion of Bahadur Shah she sent a Rakhi to emperor Humayun. The emperor in response rushed with his troops to defend Chittor's pride. There are other legends like legend of Lord Krishna and Draupadi, King Bali and goddess Laxmi etc.

Guru Purnima to be celebrated on 3rd July 2012

Guru Purnima is the auspicious full moon day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashad. This day is remembered as a sacred day in memory of great ancient Rishi Vyasa who edited four Vedas, wrote eighteen Puranas, the Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavata. This day is dedicated to Gurus who offer us the treasures of knowledge. The word Guru means one who removes darkness of ignorance from our lives. In present days Guru Purnima is celebrated in schools, Colleges and various other places where the Gurus are worshipped by their students. Great respect is offered to the Gurus and their blessings are taken by students. Some cultural programs are also arranged on this day. This year Guru Purnima will be celebrated on Tuesday 3rd July 2012.

Guru Shishya Parampara is the oldest trend in Hindu religion. In older days at a certain age shishya’s or students were sent to Gurukul, the place where Guru (teacher) used to offer knowledge to the students. There used to be a ceremony in which the Guru used to accept these students for teaching them knowledgeable things. By acquiring this knowledge the student was turned into a successful personality in his future life. The shishya’s used to obey the orders or instructions given by the Guru. After getting knowledge from the Guru, during the send of ceremony the Shishya’s used to offer Guru Dakshina asked by the Guru.

Guru Shishya Parampara still exists but is limited to learning some art like playing a musical instrument, singing or learning or even a sports activity. Our culture keeps a firm belief in the teacher-disciple tradition and believes that without the guidance of a Guru it is very difficult to acquire knowledge. Further the spiritual Gurus are offered the same status equivalent to the status of God and one has to become a Shishya of such a Guru to know the truth of the universe. The spiritual Guru is supposed to be in the vicinity of God. This Guru Shishya tradition is beyond the boundaries of religion, cast and creed. This relationship between Guru and disciple is considered to be sacred. It is independent of age and is purely spiritual in nature. It is based on Spiritual Knowledge and Practice.
